As we travel by car we sometimes pass many old cemeteries. While driving by I look at the old grave markers and wonder who those people were. How they lived, loved and died. But most of the time there is no way to get answers to those questions. Therefore, I was very excited when I got an invitation a few months back from out township because they wanted to share a cool project they have been working on. After months of reading many old binders and old kept papers, talking to the old people and walking the cemetery they were ready to go online!

So now if you want to find a grave of a long family member or just curious when driving by there is a tool that you can use to get more information. Right now, they only have the basic information put in, but they hope to extend this with background information about the deceased, pictures and everything that families want to share and save for future generations and family members. I think this is so cool. If you read this, you can go to flynntownship.org/omard-cemetery and play with the side to get a feel for it.

The coolest thing is though, that there is a QR code on the fence that you can scan. I have no idea how many cemeteries have put in the time and effort to do this but, from now on I will be on the lookout for those codes when I pass a cemetery and maybe even stop and check it out. Cemeteries are such a rich source of history and tell stories of great long lives lived, veterans being honored and not forgotten and stories of great sorrow.(see top picture)
